What does it mean to follow Jesus?
by V. S. Maday
It means relinquishing all worldly possessions to follow Him. We sit in our houses, warm and cozy. Without a blink of an eye, we go to the refrigerator to get something cool to drink, when what of our neighbor? Do we even care if our neighbor has been fed, or has shelter, or even has clothes to wear? Yet, we have all these necessities, and then some. Are we living the way Christ would want us to live?
In Mark 10:21 Jesus speaks to the rich young man and says, “One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”
What is this Christ is saying. Do we have the courage to do what He says here?
There have only been a select few people who have lived this exact way. How can we even call ourselves Christians if we are not willing to live this way?
When Christ said when he walked among us, “Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and to God the things which are God’s.” What did He mean by this?
Are we going to be able to say, like the Apostles, that we did follow Christ? Will we be able to hear from God’s lips say to us, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” If we want to be able to not lose our reward in heaven, then we must be willing to as the latter part of this verse says, “Come take up the cross, and follow me.”
How can we say we are a Christian, and not live as the early disciples did? We go to our jobs, day in and day out, and for what, to make money. The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Why do we have family problems? Why do we have separation in the family? Are we blind as not to see that because, we have become a society which his dependent on money to live, that in essence we have forsaken God?
Are we willing to forsake family, friends, and even ourselves, to live for Christ? As Christ said, “Know ye not that I came not to bring peace on earth, but a sword …. For thine enemies shall be those of thine own house … “
Are we ready for the future? What is our answer? There are only two choices?
“Yes” or “No.” What is your answer going to be?
As Christ said, “How is it ye cannot discern the signs of the times?” Better be ready? “For as in an hour as ye think not the Son of Man, Jesus Christ Himself, cometh.” (Matt. 24:44 KJV)
